The office of vital records for the state of Maine is located in Augusta at 244 Water Street, State House Station #11. For many years the Maine Vital Records department has been very diligent in gathering and filing all health and vital records that have and are taking place in their state. However in years gone by the records used to be kept in the individual towns and cities throughout Maine especially those records that predate the Civil Wars. Even though the state requested these records be brought to a centralized location many still have not followed through which will make it difficult to located and obtain copies of those early documents.
