The man was sitting in a dark corner of the bar. He was a shadow among shadows but I recognized him instantly. I had worked beside him for 3 years. The man glared at me when I sat in the seat opposite without invitation, then smiled wryly as he identified me. I blurted out, “Why did you quit, Bob? You designed the best humidifiers compared to anyone else! I never saw anything that looked better than the ones in your sketches.” Bob sighed, swirling his drink, letting the ice melt. “Actually kid,” he said, “I’ve always wanted to be in the air conditioning business.”
